So Proud!
Well my son & I have been having this "on going" debate... He has been in Chorus at school since the 3rd grade and he's in 8th this year. For his extra classes this year he's taking Latin I (don't ask) and Chorus! So we've been planning his classes for next year since he will be going to high school :( Of course he will have to take Latin II so that he can complete his 2 years of Foreign Language early and he's dreamed of being able to take Drama but he thinks that he will use his 3rd extra class spot for Chorus again..... Okay this is my argument and yes it's boy/girl bias. My feeling is that he's taken Chorus for 6 years and it's time for him to retire from it. You really don't see that many high school boys in Chorus especially due to the voice changing situation. It would be different if he didn't want to take Drama. I just feel that instead of 2 fun things Drama and Chorus, he should do Drama because it's something different and use the other class towards something that will actually do him some good such as Biology or etc..... I've explained to him that if he uses his extra classes wisely that when it comes to his Junior and Senior year, he may want to use his extra classes for Technical School. What do you think? Am I wrong to dictate his classes? Am I being to pushy? I do have to put in a note of extreme pride for my son. This past Saturday, he took the yearly trip of trying out for "All County Chorus". He was one of the chosen in 4th grade and hadn't been able to make it back in each year since. Well, he was so worried because after the 2nd practice it was noticed that it's become very difficult for him to sing higher notes the way that he used to however it was too late to switch to a deeper tone section so he automatically thought he was doomed for the tryouts.... What he lacked of in voice, he made up for it by practicing really hard AND not only did he get accepted but he made it into the County's top 20 (out of 150 to 170 students from this county). Also while I'm having a day of pride for him (no attitude for 2 days now) I have to give him HUGE kudos because his school is finally taking a stance against kids being bullied.... this has been a major issue for me with this county's school district, his 5th & 6th grade in the middle school were tough due to being bullied by older kids. I know I spent every other day at the school complaining about it yet the kids were never punished or anything done to stop it. Anyways, Daniel remarked interest of being in a newly started up Anti-Bullying group in partnership with the school's counseling. The program has taken off and they have been meeting once a week for about a month now. We signed the official contract earlier this week and my son will be with the group that will be working with the 5th graders....... It's times like these that give me such a good feeling and my heart swells with pride to think of my son wanting to help others........ Even with the bouts of attitude, I know that I'm blessed to have a relatively good kid (even if he drives me bonkers by not doing his assignments!) Thanks for listening as I rambled on about my son today....... Please take a minute and give your child/children a big hug (even if they say yuck) just do it because they grow up way to quickly!!!
